and
- John Webster b Yorkshire 21 May 1815 bap Lane Particular Baptist church Bramley, Leeds
married St Peter's Leeds 1835 to Mary Stead or Mary Steed or Sarah Stead or Mary Sarah Stead
Just before his first wife Mary Webster nee Stead died at Horsforth in childbirth in 1849, leaving him with 3 young sons and at least one daughter,
John Webster spent time in debtor's prison - York Castle and a few years later, in Lancaster gaol.
After marrying the widow Hannah Robinson nee Aram in 1849, John Webster was in debt again.
His occupations were listed as :
Scribbler - probably a woollen scribbler or slubber
Hairdresser and perfumer - remember wigs were all the go back then
Shopkeeper selling provisions, confectionery, fruit, furniture, hardware and smallwares
Ginger beer and cordial manufacturer
and Assisting a Publican to sell real beer.
He also dabbled in hiring out horses and being an iron monger.
John Webster lived in Bramley, Holbeck and Horsforth near Leeds, England
then Bradford, then Back Crescent Inn and Clarendon Street, Manchester.

The Webster Robinson family arrived in Australia from 1853 and spent some time on the Ballarat goldfields before 1856.

'Our' John Webster and family may have been in Ballarat during the events of the Ballarat Riots
now known as the Eureka Stockade.
A John Webster was interviewed in November 1854 re a disputed claim made in April 1854. This John Webster mentioned a man known as 'Yorkey' also known as Henry Westerby or Westoby.
In 1855 over 400 miners signed a petition for compensation for Mr Benden Sherritt Hassell also known as Benden Sherral Hassall or Benden Sharvell Hassell
A Daniel Robinson, a William Robinson and a Thomas Webster were among those who signed the 1855 petition
Benden Hassell and Robert Monkton worked at the London Hotel which was near the Eureka Lead

John Webster was a soda water manufacturer for "two years on his own account," before joining a partnership with
William Allen, George Standish Hartrick, Thomas Christopher Coates and Joseph Elam Pounds
of the Spring Hill Mineral Water Company in Ballarat.
John Webster joined the partnership in March 1856, signing with Melbourne solicitor McCormick.
The Spring Hill Mineral Water Company was offered for sale in July 1856,
described as situated between the town, Main Road and Sebastopol, White Horse Leads.
During 1856, John also worked as a carter for Monckton,
probably Hassall and Monckton flour mill on the S.W. corner of Wendouree Parade and Webster Street, Ballarat.
By Oct 1856, John was before the Geelong Court of Insolvency,
describing his property as :- one tent worth five pounds and four boxes of wearing apparel.
Reasons given for insolvency by John, included pressure of creditors and no money from Spring Hill,
reasons given by Spring Hill included abusive language.
Several County Court cases for libel were mentioned.
In 1859 John Webster applied for a renewal of his license at the Freemason's Hotel at Moorabool River. An objection was raised re his sobriety as well as his inclination to allow frequent dancing. John's application was granted.
In 1859, John Webster was again going through Insolvency proceedings
when he had assets worth 300 pounds and liabilities of 500 pounds,
as a licensed victualler of Moorabool Viaduct near Geelong,
possibly situated at the corner of the present Geelong Ballan Road, where it intersects Steiglitz Road and Viaduct Road.
John Webster was renting a wooden house known as the Freemason's Hotel owned by William Watts.
Both William Watts and Louisa Ann Noonan signed as witnesses for the Robinson Webster family.
John's reasons for insolvency included the effect on customer's access to his business
from having the site fenced in by Railway workers.
During Jan 1857,  John worked in deep sinking at Steiglitz goldfields for John Burwood.

On the move again, John Webster became a storekeeper at Meredith, Victoria, again insolvent in 1860
citing illness of himself and family as well as being sued in various Courts.
Apparently John owed Richard O'Donnell 65 pounds, being listed as a defendant in the Supreme Court.
A determined Philip Lawrence, messenger of the Insolvent Court, Ararat paid several visits to the premises at Meredith,
being "offered sixpence" by John Webster, who also used bad language and waved a gun around until his wife put it away.
Joseph Webster even gave Philip the family's pet cockatoo, but this case was not going away.
Philip Lawrence made many enquiries and seized goods that had been stashed at various places, including the home of
Hannah Webster's cousin, Henry Scott, carpenter of Drummond street Ballarat, opposite the hospital.

The following is Henry Scott's basic family tree

John Webster was remanded for fraudulent insolvency on the 10 October 1860, despite declaring his absolute innocence, saying he had never had a summons or warrant against him, then weeping like a child.
He was sentenced to two and a half years gaol on 12 Feb 1861, which would have been three years "on the roads"
but for several character witnesses.
John was in Melbourne Gaol or Pentridge Gaol where he was described as having grey eyes, being 5 feet 6 and a half inches tall and weighing 11 stone 10 pounds - In our terms - short and chunky!
John Webster was convicted in Ballarat but may not have 'served time' in the newly built Ballarat gaol.
He was free by July 1863.
Hannah Webster and the children may have stayed in Meredith or shifted to Ballarat or Melbourne while John was in gaol.

The Webster family then moved to Benalla, about 1865,
applying for mining leases at Limmerick Reef and Nova Scotia Reef near Benalla.
By 1869, John had built and purchased new equipment for a cordial manufactory in Arundel street, Benalla.
A photo with 'Norma Ledger' written in pencil on the front was taken c 1870
and shows Mr Webster, a servant girl, Mrs Webster, Mrs R. Ledger and J.W. Webster
posed in front of the wooden building.

- - - Joseph Webster b Adelong NSW 1873 (see details below - listed last in family group)
A semi-posed photo c 1850 - 1870 exists of 3 bark roofed sheds, 3 horses and 2 carts laden with bottles, 5 workers and the boss, 2 in 'flat topped straw boater' style hats, one with a stripe down his trousers, a small mountain or mountain range in the background with a note written on the back by A. R. Webster as being a 'soder-water factory...at Adelong'
Handed down from Joseph Webster who went to the Boer war against the Dutch, is a small round (approx. 9cm high x 6 cm diam.) pewter or silver cup, with no handles and no engraving. It has a coin dated 1775 as its base. The 'heads' side of the coin faces outwards. It is dated 1775 within a scroll pattern. Above the date is a shield, within which is a left facing crowned lion. The lion is holding a scroll in its left paw and wielding a sword in its right. Above the shield is a crown decorated with 3 three-leafed flowers. Either side of and holding onto the shield, are two crowned smiling lions, both facing outwards, towards the viewer. The wording around the edge of the coin is in capital letters, in Latin.
"CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT"
which means "Small states flourish by concord."
The 'tails' side of the coin is on the inside of the cup. It has a warrior in armour carrying a sword above his head in his right hand whilst seated on a rearing horse. Below the horse's belly is a shield which has a crown on top, adorned with 3 three-leafed flowers in the middle of 2 leaves or feathers. The wording around the rim is "MO: NO: CON FOE: BELG: PRO: TRAI"
which means "New silver money of the Belgian Federation, county of Utrecht (United Netherlands)"
